What is the need for introducing PIN code based chip card?
Payment with chip card is much more secure due to the fact that the embedded microchip provides highly secure memory and processing capabilities which ensures that the card is genuine and by requesting the PIN code the person using it is verified as the authorized owner. With introducing the chip card, Citibank makes the card usage more secured.
When will I get chip card?
Citibank starts to issue new chip cards and replacement of the old magnetic striped cards from January 2010.
The replacement will be phased according to the card types, and the replacement process should end in December 2010. Until your magnetic stripe card will be replaced you can use it as usual as it is accepted by all ATM and POS terminals displaying VISA logo.
Immediately upon chip card receive please activate your chip card according with received instructions and cut the old – magnetic striped card across the magnetic stripe.
If I get the new chip card before the expiry date of the magnetic stripe card, do I have to pay the annual fee again?
Replacement of the magnetic stripe card with the new chip card does not affect the annual fee charging. Annual fee is charged in the same month every year: on the anniversary of the card open date. No extra annual fee will be charged if the card is replaced before the expiry date of the old card.
When will I get the PIN code?
Citibank credit cards must be activated before card usage through CitiPhone Banking. During the activation process, you have to create 2 PIN-s
- telephone identification code(T-PIN),
- PIN code, used for cash withdrawals and retail purchases
Please do not use the same number as T-PIN and PIN and avoid setting it based on your personal data (birth date, anniversary dates, etc).
What changes does chip card bring during purchases?
If you use your credit card in shops or restaurants for example, you will need to key in your four digits PIN code. The transaction will be approved only if the entered PIN code corresponds with the PIN code stored on the chip.
Where can I pay or withdraw cash with my chip card?
Acquiring places accept both chip and magnetic stripe cards. You can use your chip card the same way as your magnetic stripe card, for retail purchases (point-of sales locations) and cash withdrawals (ATM) that have the proper association logo (VISA). The acquiring places network will switch gradually to chip card acceptance.
Do I have to use PIN code or signature during purchases with Chip card?
If the acquiring place has point-of-sale terminal (POS) compatible with chip card acceptance every time you use your chip card you will be required to key in your PIN code and also you might be required to sign the receipt.
What happens if I forget my PIN code? How can I change my PIN code?
If you forgot your PIN code or if you wish to change it you should call CitiPhone Banking, where you can create new PIN code with the help of the IVR or Citibank bankers.
What PIN code should I choose?
PIN is a code of four digit number that you can setup. Based on security reasons, PIN code should not be tracked from personal data (eg: birth date) or should not be numbers following a sequence.
You must not write the PIN code on the card or keep it in your wallet next to your card as if you loose your card or wallet will lead to fraudulent use. In these cases the cardholder will be responsible for the fraudulent charges. Do not share the PIN code with others.
What happens if I enter wrong PIN code during purchase or cash withdrawal?
During purchase or cash withdrawal you have three possibilities for entering the right PIN. If you do not enter the correct PIN code three times in a raw your card will be blocked for your security, thus any unauthorized person cannot use it. In these cases please contact immediately CitiPhone Banking and after successful identification, you can change your PIN code, and use your card again.
Can I use the Chip card for internet purchases?
The Citibank chip cards can be used for internet purchases as the chip cards are embossed cards. However during internet purchases, you will not be required to enter your PIN code. Instead of it, the merchant will ask for CVV2 (in case on Visa)/CVC2 (for MasterCard) code, which is written on the back of the card next to the signature panel.
